I have been asked a lot about how I process my black and white images for my Instagram. In this video I show you the basic technique I use, using curves and HSL sliders within the Darkroom app, right on my iPhone. I will also show you how to get similar results on Snapseed for you Android users. You can also take these tips and use them high end editing software like Lightroom and Photoshop.

If you found it helpful, share it on.

Jez Lerman says:

Cool. Now let’s apply the same edit across multiple images, something Snapseed can’t do (at least last time I looked). I’m not talking applying a preset on a one-by-one image basis. I mean applying the finished edit across tens or hundreds with a single mouse click, as we can do in Lightroom, X3 etc.

Awesome video. Thank you!

Graeme Whittle says:

Hi there …. great video. Not sure if anyone else has pointed this out to you but in SnapSeed you do have slider control on the black and white colour filters. Just choose the filter and then move your finger left or right on the image.
Thanks again, great info!

Tomek Bidzinski says:

Hello Sean , I love your videos about editing and street photography .
Have you though to organise class about street photography , I mean take a small group to the streets and learn how to find the best available light or find the moment or the right background …etc.
I’m new on photography and I would like to learn on the field than in s classroom .
Cheers

I’ll put my website on Squarespace just to feel that I’m paying you for such a great content! Thank you for that. I would love to see the color grading process. Do you know if there is a good android alternative for darkroom?

Martial Comeau says:

Great video Sean! I would like to know, since a cell’s screen is not calibrated, how to you set it before editing your photos?

j0nashenriksen says:

Excellent video Sean, both educationally and visually. Yes, i would really like to see your workflow with colour photos.
Keep up your inspiring work.

Eric Liang says:

Nice and noted.

Claudiu Ciungan says:

Thank you for the video Sean. You have a very natural way of explaining things and I can tell you have a passion for photography.

Cale Muffley says:

I’m noticing while editing in lightroom mobile, if you drop the saturation in the color panel, then go to the color mix and mess with the luminance nothing happens (and please correct me if im wrong), however when you hit the B&W button on the color panel and you go to color mix it only lets you change the luminance and I see results. Just wondering if it’s my eyes or what. I’m guessing there’s no point in changing the hue and saturation on a specific color for a b&w pic.

Joshua Henriquez says:

I always end up watching the entire purple pillow and mattress ad 🙁 plz help

Nora Kaszuba says:

You are an excellent teacher, Sean! I am enjoying your videos and yes…would love a video on color processing.

Rodney Topor says:

Good tutorial, thanks.  But Darkroom – Photo Editor by Bergen Co. seems to be iPhone only.  I’d rather edit photos on my iPad Mini 4.  Currently I’m using Snapseed, which is great.  But is Darkroom – Photo Editor also available for iPad, and if not is there a similar app for B&W conversion that improves on Snapseed?  Thanks.

Hello Gregory says:

Good day, when using your Fuji camera what is your preferred film simulation? 1. When shooting to convert into black and white 2. When shooting for color? I’m really enjoying your feed and your philosophy. Thanks and keep up your incredible inspiration and work. G

Carlos C. says:

You´ve helped me so much to understand how to edit more than use presets. Thank you!
